With all the craze about Webkinz, not only is it loved by children but also by parents as well. Moms are now able to interact with their children by spending time with them in the Webkinz World.
Parents also like it as they can monitor what their kids are doing inside the Webkinz World. Even though the child has a new virtual world to look after, the parent can still control what his/her child is doing and this is what parents really like because they always like to keep their children safe especially when it involves the Internet.
With all this, it does not mean that parents should just let their children be. Of course, guidance and judgement should still be used.
To help parents, particularly moms, who have a child that is very much into Webkinz, here are ‘7 top tips’ to help you control but still have fun with your child.
Tip 1: Control the internet and play time of your child
There have been concerns raised that some children are becoming addicted to the game and want to play all the time. We know that doing anything too much is bad and because of the monitor, staying on the internet for too long can strain their eyes, just like the tv would. So, just monitor the play time of your child and keep it to a minimum.
Tip 2: Teach your child how to communicate with peers inside the game
A chat system is always a concern for parents in the Internet, but do not worry, because KinzChat has enabled their system to have a list of phrases to ask and to say. This means that they cannot type but instead choose from the phrases listed. This is a safety precaution due to thi site being used mainly by children. What you can also do is explain to your child the dangers of the internet and that they should communicate with other kids that are online, like letting them ask “How was school today?”, as this can help them to develop real life skills.
Tip 3: Do not let your child take their Webkinz toys to school
Although these toys help our kids learn, don’t forget that they are still toys. Allowing your child to take toys to school will distract your child and the other children as well. Let you child focus on school. Even if your kid is begging you, it is best to say no. You know better.
Tip 4: DO NOT barter with your child
Because of the popularity of Webkinz toys, children will want to collect as many as they can. The actual toys are not only the Webkinz products, children will want to get all the merchandise too. Your kids need to understand that no is no and that money does not grow on trees. Bartering with them, like; “If you get an A on this test then I will get you that Webkinz toy you want”, will not work. They may be motivated at the time, but it will not benefit you or them in the long run.
Tip 5: Prioritise study time over play time
Once your child is done with school, the immediate thing he/she will want to do is play in Webkinz World. This is not a good idea as homework will never get done. By insisting that they finish their homework first you will teach your child about priorities.
Tip 6: Learn with your child
If you play with your child, you will learn with them and have a better understanding of what goes on in Webkinz World. This will also give you some quality time together, which may be lacking if they are playing all the time. Your child will then find it easier to relate to you over things both inside the game and out.
Tip 7: Have fun!
